small favors
This matter of the house burning has many interesting, sometimes even comical, side issues.
We've had separette toilets in the cabin for four or five years. These are Scandinavian waterless toilets, a kind of glorified bucket system. Urine goes to a holding tank or greywater system, solids and paper end up in a bucket lined with biodegradeable plastic. A small fan vents and dessicates the bucket contents.
These toilets have worked well for short-term guests, but now we're in a position to say that we find them comfortable, odor-free, and easy to manage even with full-time habitation. Five of us are living and working in the cabin, and I can clean/change the bag once a week. No mess, no smell.
Bravo the Finns, this toilet really works.
