potato harvest
Pontiac potatoes -- thin-skinned, red, sweet -- are tastiest, but we also raise Kennebecs (another reliable producer) and Yukon Gold -- not as productive but the longest-storing potato we know. This year we got about 1200# harvested from about 200# planted, a decent harvest, if not stellar. Six weeks of dry weather in June and July would have reduced our harvest in any case, but these potatoes went in two weeks after Good Friday, our target planting date. Nevertheless, with only five of us living at home now, this harvest will feed us an entire year, plus culls to feed the pigs.
Don't miss the Skills Weekend in September for 30+ workshops on independent farming.
