the need for predators
Kitten season is upon us.
Every ecosystem requires predator species, and a farm is no exception. Without cats, rodent populations go unchecked. Once we were without cats for a brief while, and the various rodents -- mostly meadow voles, eastern brown mice, and Norway rats -- moved through the kitchen garden like a devouring flame. Infant green beans, ear corn barely in the milk, spinach seedlings -- all the dewiest, tenderest produce disappeared down their little pink gullets.
Now we keep three cats, and instead of a glut of pests, we enjoy a glut of kittens -- contact us around the middle of September to claim yours.
