which grid? grid-proof
Must access to a grid, use of a grid, necessarily mean vulnerability to that grid? Might some services be used when available, dispensed with when they become prolematic?
Of course, until we have to live without it, our independence of any grid is more than a little theoretical. We don't use the medical system on a regular basis -- we've taken antibiotics twice in the past ten years, maybe. But abstaining from the use of any grid while it's available is not quite the same as its being unavailable. If someone gets a compound fracture, we're going straight to the hospital.
And knowing we don't need refrigeration when food comes in fresh every day isn't the same as being comfortable with passive-storage home life patterns. Familiarity takes time.
Planning ahead for the shift from grid-dependent systems when that time comes, helps us sleep at night. There are enough canning jars and lids so if the freezer shuts down long-term, we can process the meat it holds before that meat spoils.
Other grids may be necessary right up until they are obsolete. How many folks do you know who are completely independent of fossil-fuel availability?
