winter: extreme weather in the garden

Mostly kale doesn't care about cold weather, but this year's burden of snow over ice over snow for weeks has made the kale in the open garden look sad. No harvest here until the snow goes off and we get a little sun. Next year we'll grow more of our kale in the high tunnel with the spinach and carrots, so we don't have this long hiatus without kale for salads.

This poor little guy looks like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. Not to worry, though -- he'll perk right up as soon as the snow goes off.
