first hard frost

Two-tenths of an acre of mangel-wurzels -- the second tenth went in late, and the weeds took about a quarter of it -- to be pulled, topped, piled and tarped before frost. We made it, but only by about 24 hours. Three people, about three-and-a-half hours.

Later, but not much later, we'll bag them in old feed sacks (courtesy of a neighbor) and haul them to the root cellar. They'll contribute to feeding four pigs for the winter.
