dealing with rejection: ewes and porter
Note Astrid, Katahdin ewe and first time mother. Her lambs, when they arrive, look to her like demented white gremlins, and she wants nothing to do with them. Solution: the young shepherdess grabs Astrid and pours a bottle of black porter (brown malt beer -- none of the humans wanted to drink it) down her unwilling throat. Note the sequence: Astrid struggles briefly, suffers herself to be held while the babies nurse, and then takes a nap. Awaking, she is the model mother. Once again, conviviality comes to the rescue.
Thank you to the Callens family in St. Leo, MN, for this invaluable trick.
